Light requirement: Full sun

Frost protection: Pepper plants do not like the cold. Even a light frost will damage them. When air temperatures dip (mid 30°F to lower 40ۨ°F) cover plants with sheets or frost blankets. When temperatures are even below 55°F it can cause yellow leaves and slow the plants growth.

Planting: Space most plants 12 to 36 inches apart, depending on type (refer to plant tag for details).

Soil requirements: Peppers need well drained, nutrient rich soil. Amend soil with compost, manure or other organic matter prior to planting. Prefer soil PH between 6 to 7.

Water requirements: Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season. Water deep and regular while the fruit is developing.  Plants require on average 1 inch of water per week. During dry spells they may need more.

Mulch: When temperatures remain warm, both during the day and at night you can add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and prevent soil borne pathogens from splashing onto the leaves.

Maintenance: Generally, peppers have few problems. Monitor for common pest such as aphids, leaf miners and cutworms.

Harvesting: Peppers can be harvested at any stage of growth but their flavor is best a full maturity.  Waiting to harvest until fruit reaches full maturity will reduce yield. Frequent picking will increase yield but will sacrifice flavor. Use pruning shears or knife to cut the fruit from the branch. Trying to pull the fruit may result in damaging the branch or entire plant.

Storage: Store your peppers unwashed in the refrigerator in a loosely closed plastic bag. Keep them dry, as moisture is the enemy and will cause them to rot faster.
