General Maintenance:
-
Continue to provide birds with fresh water and food. Remember our annual "Fall Fair & Birding Day" has SALES on bird supplies and seed. (Saturday, Oct. 11th)
-
Prevent swarming insects, such as Asian lady beetles and box elder bugs, from entering your home with Hi Yield 38 Plus. (available in "The Old Mill Store")
-
Before freezing temperatures move all liquids indoors. Clean up ceramic and clay pots and move indoors to prevent cracking. Cement fountains and pots should be covered or turned over to prevent water from freezing and cracking the bowls.
-
Compost leaves, grass clippings and plant debris. "Compost Maker" available in "The Old Mill Store"
-
Move houseplants inside! Check for bugs, spray with an insecticidal soap in needed.
Trees & Shrubs:
- "SALE" on shade and ornamental trees, evergreens and deciduous shrubs.
- When planting this season, Do not plant to deep! Research indicates that trees and shrubs suffer more from being planted to deep than any other problem.
- Planting may continue until the ground freezes!
- Use 2-4 inches of mulch around trees and shrubs. (do not allow mulch to touch the trunk). Mulching controls soil temperature, retains moisture, helps reduce weeds, prevents lawn mowers from damaging trunks and looks great.
- Because of our dry conditions, continue to water plants. Cooler weather sometimes make us believe they will not need to be monitored.
- Evergreen especially need to be watered up till the ground freezes. Evergreen needles will use and loose moisture all winter. It's important to provide enough moisture to prevent browning of needles
Lawns:
- Apply step 4 (Winterizer)of our "Premium Lawn Care Program"
- Dormant seeding will begin soon!
- Repair bare spots with one of our custom Grass Seed Mixes. It's important to mulch these areas with EZ Mulch or straw to control soil temperature and retain moisture.
- Lawns should receive 1 to 2 inches of water per week.
- Fall is a great time for controlling broadleaf weeds in the lawn, (i.e. Dandelions, Creeping Charlie etc.)
- Continue to mow your lawn at about 2 to 3 inches and leave clippings to return nutrients to the soil. Try to avoid clumping. Final mowing of the season should be shorter to prevent disease and rodent problems.
- Fall is a great time to thatch and aerate your lawn, if needed.
Perennial & Vegetable Gardens:
- "SALE" on perennials!
- Fall Flower Collection is here! (Mums, Asters, Pansies, Hibiscus, Sunflowers, Rudbeckia etc.)
- Spring Flowering Bulbs Are Here! (Daffodils, Tulips, Crocus and many more!)
- After a hard frost remove all dead plant material to prevent insects and disease problems next year.
- Prepare garden soil for next spring. Use "Fertilome Ultimate Potting Mix" to loosen garden soil - We use it in all our beds at our garden center!
- Sow winter rye for a green manure crop (available in "The Old Mill Store")
- After hard frost, dig and store begonias, dahlias and glads. Dust bulbs with an insecticidal dust, store in a box of vermiculite and put in a cool basement.
